It’s my turn in the Sister Sketch Exchange and this time around I was having a bit of trouble figuring out what to do. I usually use this exchange as a way to experiment with things I have ideas about. Right now though my ideas are more other materials dimensional than paper related dimensional. If that makes sense. Finally inspiration did hit and out of it came little present doors with “Santa’s Companions” behind them. It started out as being a Krampus thing but then evolved when I found something referring to all these different characters as known “associates” of Santa. These guys are there to make him look good, or they are thought to be previous incarnations of Santa before he became more pleasant. It was a bit tricky to photo but hopefully you get the idea.
Last of the bunch.
More of the 4×4 creature drawings.
As I figure out what my goals will be for this year, I have been doing some small 4″ x 4″ drawings with my Curious Creature characters. I’ve been playing with paper types and colour combos. One thing I do know is that I’m ready to expand and add a few creatures to the world. Here are some of the experiments.
Both of these drawings I found hard to do. Faces and large amounts of repetition and detail I find hard. Mostly because I feel like I have trouble focusing on just one thing at a time. I get overwhelmed by the detail and can’t seem to find a through line. I am happy with the results though. New goal is to try and do some detail sketches like this more frequently to hopefully start being able to see through all the “clutter” easier and sharpen my observation skills.
This one was a good excuse for some Dr. Who fan art. 🙂
Got this one done one time this week. It helps that I was procrastinating on something else. 🙂
Busy times. I’ve been working on a few submissions for a few different projects that I hope to write about soon. That and life has kept me quite busy meaning once again the Illustration Fridays have fallen to the wayside. I’ve discovered that while waiting for paint to dry one can sneak one or two of these in. 🙂 Been enjoying playing with gouache lately so most of these were primarily done in that medium. As always experimenting ensued.
Well I’ve finally freed myself from the all encompassing job that took over EVERYTHING. Caught up on life stuff a bit and now I’m getting back to some drawing time. I have been absent for a month and a half (or so) on the Illustration Friday’s. Wow that flew by fast! I contemplated trying to do a catch up on all the missed ones, like in the past, but decided against it. Mainly this is because there are other projects I’m interested starting in so why bog it all down when this is supposed to FUN and not a chore. So here it is! I’m continuing with this last Friday’s word. Contraption.
Here’s the one I skipped. It took me a while to figure out what to do. I ended up watching a video online from Typo San Francisco given by typography Gemma O’ Brien. I have been following her on Instagram for awhile and find her posts quite inspiring. Her talk at Typo SF was just that … inspiring. It has been awhile since I have done a post using letters so I thought this might be a good one to try. I ended up deciding to do the word made from Zodiac symbols turned into letters all floating in space. Not a complicated piece, but figuring out the letters out of the symbols took a little bit of doodling before starting.
