Art Walk and New Things!

thumb_IMG_0486_1024

I’m Alive! Earlier this month I decided to embark upon a new adventure in the world of what to do with my Curious Creature characters. So I took them to the street! 🙂 It was an long thought about idea to do a booth at the Whyte Avenue Art Walk and I’m happy to say it was a good one. It was a super scary idea to go stand out there and let people see what I’ve been up to, but it was a really positive experience. I never expected to enjoy the look on peoples faces as much as I did when they would be walking by and then stop and do a double take as if to wonder “what the heck is this?” Other than all the feedback, I sold a few of my larger peices to people who I think are really gonna enjoy these odd little guys starring back at them everyday. I also sold out my Series 1 Creature Card Series so now I get to embark on Series 2!  What more could I really hope for?

What’s this about “new things”. Well after a much needed week of decompressing from the event I am full of ideas of what to get up to next. To start, I’m trying out a new online shop to sell some of my easier to ship pieces. It’s with Big Cartel and I’m pretty excited to see how it all works out. Best part is I can list my items in Canadian dollars! I’m listing some of the coloured pencil creature drawings that didn’t sell from Art Walk first. It’s not many so I’m going to rotate them about. This week it’s all about the Hifishcus.

What is the Hifishcus? Well it’s thought to be a hibiscus jellyfish hybrid. Rarely seen, they are thought to live down in the depths of the ocean. Once a year you can maybe catch a glimpse of them as they all float to the surface to find mates. Glowing in the dark waters off the coast. As quickly as the sun sets so too is their brief appearance on the surface. Then back down they go hiding themselves away in the dark from prying eyes.

Ooo, ahh.  In a couple weeks their enemy the Heliconia is hot on their trail. 🙂 I’ve started out with a small account to see how this will be received but my hope is to post a new drawing ever other week or so to add some new work to the mix. Click here and check it out.

Save the Date! Come on out to the Whyte Avenue Art Walk July10-12th and see new work in my Society of Curious Creatures Project. There will be items big and small for purchase, or come say hello and have a chat. I’ll be doing previews of some of the new work for the next two weeks on my social media sites.

Sketch Exchange Time

As always I have high hopes for the first part of the year being a successful blogging time. Never happens. Work takes over and my other projects all end up on the back burner. So without further ado here is the latest offering in the sister sketch exchange. It’s from a couple months ago now, but this was super fun. Hoping to expand upon the ideas I started here and turn these guys into 3D sculpts one day.

As I figure out what my goals will be for this year, I have been doing some small 4″ x 4″ drawings with my Curious Creature characters. I’ve been playing with paper types and colour combos. One thing I do know is that I’m ready to expand and add a few creatures to the  world. Here are some of the experiments.

Beetle Taggin’ 2014

Alright I’m a bit behind in posting so it’s time to do some catch up. This year’s Christmas present tags started out early on in November. Yes, that’s how far behind I am…Christmas. It’s the earliest I have ever started the tags and I stuck with doing a linocut print again this year. I have really been enjoying them over the last few years.

This years guy is inspired by the Anoplognathus pallidicollis better known as the Australian Christmas Beetle. Known as this because of it’s appearance en masse around the Christmas season. Oh so clever of a name 🙂 Beetles are festive right? It had a great muted gold and green tone to it from photos I found. Add a few eucalyptus leaves and berries and there we go. I originally intended to print the beetle in gold but after a few test prints I changed my mind and went with a green print and gold detailing added in after the fact. The final colouration isn’t very true to the original insect but I like how it turned out. The gold doesn’t show well here but it’s quite flashy as it turns in the light. Here’s a pic of the beetle in his green state and then with the added gold. I may try and do some prints in just gold again but maybe on a different paper. I felt the white background just washed the whole thing out too much. It is a tag after all and needs to stand out a bit.

Do People Still Send Christmas Cards?

Well the title of this post is two fold. The first is truly a serious question. I do…randomly…send Christmas cards that is.  Some years I do, others I don’t. This year I was struck with inspiration so these illustrations will appear on the Christmas cards I’m sending out.

Needing somewhere to have them made I turned to Society 6. I have been eyeing them up for awhile and thought now might be a good time to open a store. But you already have a store? Yes I do but this one allows me to offer things that I otherwise wouldn’t be able to. So the second purpose of this post is to let you everyone know that they can stop by my Society 6 shop  for Christmas cards and other reproduction work and my StorEnvy shop will be for selling my originals.

Spread the word if you like. If not shhhh no one like a negative nancy. 🙂

Here’s a fun little side project for a friend. My spouse is an amazing artist in his own right. He makes these beautiful cigar box instruments. The necks, knobs and finishing details are all hand carved and painted. They are also all playable. He’s made everything from guitars, ukeleles and banjos. He’s also been known to dabble in making speaker cabinets and effects pedals as well. It’s really quite awesome stuff. Have a pop over to his site and check his stuff out. bobbysmale.com

What does this all have to do with me you ask? Well a musician friend of ours is preforming in a theatrical comedy show called One Man Two Governors. He plays a part in this awesome Skiffle band that is part of the show. He purchased one of Bobby’s creations to play in the show and managed to talk him into building a custom case for it. Not something he usually does but he’s a good friend. Wanting to add a little something special we decided to paint the instruments name on the case for an added personalization. So fun letting project for Angie! Yay! Here’s the finished product with the maker’s mark in gold below.
